After a semester
where the Tropolitan has been perceived as beating up on the university,
it’s always nice to end the year praising our administration.
For the first time in many years, Troy University is not raising
tuition for the 2006-07 academic year.
Troy University administration deserves a huge pat on the back,
an A+ in fact.
It’s great to see a state institution using state funding
to soften the financial requirements students face instead of passing
on the costs to students.
While larger schools such as Auburn are passing on the burden to
its students to the tune of more than a 4 percent increase, and
the federal government cuts college financial aid spending, Troy
University has made yet another commitment to making education affordable
for its students.
Many students around the country are financing their education through
grants, loans and scholarships.
For these students, every penny counts.
While we realize that the cost of education across the country is
continually rising and tuition will have to be raised in the future,
the gesture of keeping tuition at its current level is a clear indication
of what the university is capable of doing for its students.
However, there are still problems at the university that must be
fixed.
The housing problem isn’t just going to go away.
Thankfully, the university is breaking ground on a new dormitory
to house 400 students.
There are facilities that need improving.
Yet, once again, the university is addressing this area as well
with the new academic building opening this year and plans for new
buildings and renovations.
Parking continues to be a problem, but ask any student at many larger
universities and they will tell you the parking at Troy is a cakewalk.
Plus, there are many additional parking lots planned.
No institution the size of Troy University is going to be error-free.
However, the actions of Troy University show that the administration
is concerned with its students and is constantly trying to improve.
Can we really ask for more?
