It was a big week for the Troy University women’s tennis team
as it defeated North Florida on Saturday and then became a nationally
ranked team.
The match was the last home one for the Trojans as they edged North
Florida 4-3.
Tsitsi Masviba, the lone senior for Troy, had a triumphant ending
to her career as she won her singles match 6-2, 6-1 and her doubles
match 8-2.
“I’m really proud of Tsitsi. She converted both her
singles and doubles matches in her last match here,” Troy
head coach Eric Hayes said.
The match against North Florida was just a continuation of her excellent
season as she extended her record to 16-1.
The match started off good for Troy as the Trojans swept the doubles
competition, but remained close until Claudia Strauss clinched the
victory with her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Florencia Torres.
The win over North Florida allowed Troy to enter the national rankings
at the No. 74 spot after being excluded from the rankings since
March 13.
The Troy men’s team was not as successful, as they also faced
off against North Florida on Saturday.
The men’s team, in its final home match of the season, lost
4-3.
Irving Morales and Marko Despot won the first doubles match for
Troy, but the No. 2 and 3 spots were lost as the Ospreys took a
quick 1-0 lead over Troy.
The loss in the doubles matches is what proved fatal for Troy, as
they split with North Florida in the singles competition with Irving
Morales, Milos Kustudija and Pasqual Duttlinger taking the wins
for Troy.
“Losing the doubles point cost us again,” Troy head
coach Eric Hayes said. “It’s too hard to come back and
win if we go into the singles play down 1-0.”
The men’s team will take on Florida A&M this Saturday,
and the women will wait until April 20 for the Sun Belt Tournament
to start.
