Get Involved at the Trop

The Tropolitan, Troy University’s student-run newspaper, serves as a forum for the entire university community from students and faculty to staff and townspeople. As such, it presents information and viewpoints that readers can enjoy and use.

As a student-run newspaper, the Trop depends on the diligence and interest of students who want to perfect their journalistic skills. Working for the Trop can provide much-valued experience to students that will help them in their future career.

So how do you get involved? Simple. Come to a meeting, talk with a staffer, find the adviser – and get involved!

Unlike some college newspapers, there is no waiting list for positions, no screening of applicants, and no other prerequisites for working for the Trop.

In short, if you’re interested, the Trop is interested in you.

Because the practice of journalism takes practice, the Trop seeks to provide as many students as possible with the chance to write, edit, photograph, lay out and design pages, and manage staff.

In any given term, the staff numbers about 25. And of those, one-third to one-half are volunteers.

The others have received tuition-waiver. Putting in anywhere from 5-15 hours a week, these students see part or all of their tuition paid through a Trop scholarship (see application formLINK).

These scholarships are competitive and are subject to the amount of money available from the university. Incoming students can receive them.Successful applicants show an interest in pursuing a career in journalism, ability and some experience. Volunteering is a good way of demonstrating all three.

Scholarship holders must maintain a minimum 2.5 grade point average and put in a certain amount of time a week.

But, whether as a volunteer or a scholarship holder, students can make a real difference – not only in the life of the Troy University community, but in their lives as well.

Come work for the Tropolitan.
