The Troy Trojans Women’s tennis team had a successful spring
break as they won the Southern Miss Spring Tennis Classic.
The Trojans began the weekend with a 5-0 victory over Long Island.
Troy opened the match up sweeping the doubles to secure a 1-0 lead over
Long Island.
Sophomore Annabelle Bares, the Sun Belt player of the week, led the
way for Troy as she defeated H’Ann Johnson 6-2, 6-1.
Rawia Elsisi, Carolina Jouania and Stephanie Vieira all won their matches
for Troy, never allowing the opponent to score more than three points
in a set.
The Trojans’ next opponent in the Spring Tennis Classic was West
Virginia as Troy won 6-1.
“Troy is a very good squad, and we came out and played hard in
the first sets,” said WVU head coach Marc Walters.
Troy started the match off by sweeping the Mountaineers in doubles with
the pairing of Bares and Elsisi winning their match 8-3.
Bares continued her winning streak as she defeated Natalia Prinz 6-4,
6-1.
Jouania had an exciting match as she lost her first set 1-6 to Kelly
Walsh but was able to battle back 6-1, 6-0 to win the match.
Strauss, Elsisi and Vieira each won the other three matches for Troy
to secure the second win of the spring classic.
Troy secured their third and final victory of the classic as they defeated
Southern Miss 4-0.
“Today’s match meant a lot to us, not only because it was
Troy, but because it was an opportunity to play a nationally ranked
team,” said Southern Miss Head Coach Randy Rowley.
Troy secured the first point of the match as they took two of the three
doubles matches.
Strauss led the way for Troy in singles competition as she defeated
Stephanie Dellocono 6-0, 6-4.
The win over Southern Miss helped push Troy’s winning streak to
four straight.
The Troy Men’s team took on North Florida over the break and lost
7-0.
“This was a solid win for the guys,” UNF head coach Igal
Buberman said. “Everyone played solid tennis against a very tough
opponent.”
In doubles, Troy was able to secure one victory as Bona Ung and Bastian
Maucher defeated Matias Sigal and Ben Smith 8-3 but eventually lost
the point as they fell in the other two matches.
Troy was swept in singles, but they did not go down without a fight.
Dusan Medan fought valiantly, pushing the match to a tie-breaker before
falling to Javier Ferrin 6-4, 7-6 (10-8).
Ung also had a close match against Eduardo Perreira before losing 6-4,
7-5.
The loss to UNF puts Troy’s overall record at 3-8 for the year.
The men’s team next plays Sunday against Southern here in Troy
as the women’s team will travel to South Alabama tomorrow.
